When it comes to oil, there are so many different variations of synthetic, synthetic blends, and petroleum oils that it can be difficult to understand what the difference is. Every type of oil serves a specific purpose, especially when it comes to lubricating internal components. There is no one size fits all solution. While most modern machines require synthetic oils to keep them protected, there are still some differences between all of the different fully synthetic oil groups (Group III, IV, and V). Learn about the different oil groups below:
Group I
Group 1 base oils are mineral oils derived from Petroleum Crude. They are the least refined option and contain the most significant degree of variability in the molecule (hydrocarbon) shape and size.
Group II
Group 2 oils are refined mineral oils with improved purity compared to Group 1. They have moderate oxidation stability and resistance to wear, making them suitable for basic lubrication needs in less demanding conditions. Group 2 oils are commonly used in conventional motor oils due to their affordability but lack the high-temperature stability of synthetic oils. Their molecular structure is less uniform, leading to inconsistencies under stress, which can result in increased friction and wear.
Group III
While derived from mineral oil, Group 3, like SPECTRO Golden Synthetic oils undergo an advanced refining process called hydrocracking, which makes them more stable and gives them synthetic-like properties. They have a more uniform molecular structure than Group 2 oils, which improves performance, especially at moderate temperatures. Group 3 oils offer a middle ground between affordability and performance but may not hold up as well as true synthetics in extreme conditions.
Group IV
Group 4 oils, like SPECTRO Platinum 100% Synthetic PurePAO oils, are true synthetic oils created from uniform synthetic molecules. They provide exceptional thermal stability, resistance to oxidation, and superior lubrication under extreme temperatures and pressures. PAOs are ideal for high-performance engines, offering reduced friction, increased longevity, and enhanced protection. Group V
Group 5 base oils are a catch-all category that encompasses all base oils that do not fit into any other grroup. Examples of Group V include Esters, Poly-Glycols, Silicone Oils, and Perfluoropolythers (PFPE’s). Commonly used in various applications, from automotive to ndustrial lubricants. Like Group 4, Group 5 can be more expensive, depending on the specific type of application.
