Smoke Out 16

smokeout-poster-202x300

The Smoke Out is about choppers.  It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own.  Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Metric, everything.  The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm.

The event is two days to look at fine chops, listen to good music, relax, catch up with old friends or make new friends, eat good food, take a couple nice puts in a pretty countryside, drink some beer, shop the venders wares… and on and on…

There are two distinct groups of people at the Smoke Out.  The first group is the readers, builders and riders known as THE HORSE world network of operatives.  These people are the core of the chopper world.  This is the place to be for the Chopper World State of the Union Address.

The second group of invited guest is those that want to observe the core of the chopper world.  Maybe you’re a sport biker or maybe you drive a car and just saw an interesting bike show on the Discovery channel.  Choppers are interesting.  Feel free to come by.  Don’t feel that you’re not welcome just because you are riding on a stock Honda.

Zodiac Racing Champions

Zodiac Racing are 2013 European Drag Racing Champions

LEADING up to this year's European Drag Race finals at the Santa Pod Raceway in the United Kingdom in September, the Zodiac Racing team had a firm lead in the SuperTwin Top Fuel FIM European Championship.

Ronny Aasen, the Norwegian rider of the 1000hp plus Zodiac Nitro Harley, had a one round advantage over Dutch native Job Heezen, as well as Vesa Lipponen from Finland. In addition, Finnish rider Samu Kemppainen and Christian Jäger from Germany still had a realistic chance of winning the championship, too.

After the Hockenheim round Ton and Vincent Pels, the father and son team behind Zodiac, had a closer look at the data and decided to put more fuel into the engine for the last race of the season. Even though the engine was already consuming over 12 gallons of nitromethane fuel per minute, they still had the feeling the piston ring damage in Hockenheim was caused by detonation.

It looked to be the right decision, as during the first qualifier the bike smoked its 14in rear tire for the first time in the season. The 1.11s sixty-foot time showed that soft launches were a thing of the past, and justified the set-up changes.  For the second round, the ignition curve was changed a little, and this time the tire stayed hooked. Ronny was on form with a 1.12s 60ft, 2.86s 330ft and a 4.17s 1/8th mile ET, with a 214.9mph top speed. However, at this point the bike got loose and Ronny had to shut
down and he fought to control the bike.

The run still resulted in a 6.599s ET coasting through the finish line at 169mph. The 1/8th mile speed looked too good to be true and it turned out it dropped the front wheel between the speed traps, causing the speed to be recorded higher. Still the data logger showed that the speed was around
200MPH at the 1/8th mile and with the 4.17s ET on the first half, it was the best the bike had ever done by far. The 6.599 put the Zodiac team in the preliminary number one spot, more than 2/10 of a second ahead of Samu Kemppainen.

In the 3rd qualifier Ronny was able to duplicate the run-up to the 330ft mark and this time the bike ran a lot smoother. However, the primary belt broke after 350ft causing the engine to over rev. As a result of this, the team decided to sit out the last qualifier and rebuild the engine for Sunday's elimination.

Due to getting the number one qualifying spot the team had a bye run in the first round on the Sunday. In that round the bike launched hard with a little tire shake, but after a few feet the tire hooked up and ran its best 60ft time ever. Then small flashes started to come out of the side of the
bike and soon they became bigger flames. Ronny noticed something was wrong and shut off. Luckily there was no opponent in the other lane, so the round win was there.

In the pits the damage was evaluated; the rear head had lifted. Ton and Vincent quickly started to replace the head, while Ronny was doing the routine maintenance of replacing the con-rod bearings from under the bike. When the engine was warmed up for the second round of eliminations, a lot of
smoke came out of the exhausts of the front cylinder, indicating more problems.

Frantically the team tried to replace the piston and cylinder, but they did not make it in time. Ironically, Ronny had to race Vesa Lipponen who now had a freebie to the final.

This left the championship to be decided in the final between Sumu and Vesa, and it was a situation the Zodiac team did not like, as it was in Samu's hands whether they would become champion or not. If Vesa wins the final, he is the champ. If Samu wins the final, the Zodiac team wins the championship. Samu did what he needed to do, and in a nice 6.76 at 206mph he took the event win and the Zodiac team took the European Championship.

Team WMR Renews Partnership with Spectro Oils

One of the world’s foremost manufactures and packagers of premium quality lubricants continues to be the official supplier to WMR Competition Performance.

BROOKFIELD, Conn. – September 2013. The word “team” is defined as "a group of two or more individuals who perform some work related task, interact with one another dynamically, have a shared past, have a foreseeable shared future, and share a common fate." This is what comes to mind when you hear the name WMR Competition Performance of Florida. The teams’ passion for racing gives them the edge to compete at the biggest races.  According to the WMR website, “We compete at the biggest races because the only way to stay on top of the podium is to go head to head with the competition each week.” To insure that the team and its equipment operate as well-oiled machines during the grueling racing season, Spectro Oils of America is proud to announce the continued partnership with WMR.

“I am a firm believer in Spectro products,” commented Bob Brewster, Owner and Motor builder at WMR Competition Performance. “We use only Spectro oils and chemicals in all our race bikes from WMR Off Road, our KTM Satellite GNCC team in the professional XC-1 class to our top amateur motocross riders as part of the KTM Orange Brigade Elite race team.

We see the benefits of Spectro products every day as we disassemble race motors and find well-lubricated clean parts. As a motor builder since the late sixties I have seen the inside of a lot of race motors and I can almost tell by looking at the parts how the motor has been lubricated. Two stroke motors that have been using Spectro SX-2, for example, always have a clean lubricated appearance and show very little carbon build up. On the Four-stroke side pistons and transmissions show less wear and abuse when Spectro is used. In our business “Winning Is Everything” and we can’t afford DNF’s, Spectro has played a big part in helping us build and maintain some of the winningest and most reliable motors in the industry.

Dannielle Larrabee, Marketing Director at Spectro stated, “This partnership is another excellent opportunity for us to prove that “Spectro engineered excellence” isn’t just a slogan, it’s proven in the real world every day.  WMR is committed to building some of the best bikes in the world, and their professionalism to racing, motor modification and complete bike building is what makes them such a successful organization. We look forward to a long and eminent association in this continued venture.

WMR Competition Performance is a full service, state of the art race shop, KTM Dealer and the only orange level service center in Stuart, Florida. Since 1994 WMR has specialized in building race motors and custom designing suspension for some of the fastest riders in the world, and with over twenty national titles, WMR has built a reputation as a top ranking team.  The WMR race team competes in the AMA amateur mx race series. The teams’ mantra is, “Win More Races,” and with riders like Jordan Bailey and Brock Papi, they are well on their way.

The WMR is proudly sponsored by Spectro Oils of America, Nihilo Concepts, FMF, KTM, Orange Brigade, Matrix Concepts, Dunlop Tires, Motion Pro, DC Shoes, Acerbis, 100 %, One Industries, DT 1 Air Filters, DP Brakes, KTM Powerparts, KTM Powerwear, CV4, DUBYA, T.M. Leading manufacturer of performance oils becomes a promotional partner of upcoming film about motorcycle icon, John Penton.

FULLERTON, CALIF. (August 6, 2013) - When John Penton was looking for innovative, high-quality manufacturers for his "Hi-Point" line of premium off-road motorcycle accessories, he looked no further than Intercontinental Lubricants Corp., (ILC) in Brookfield, CT for his oil and lubricant products. ILC is the parent company of Spectro Oils of America, which is found in leading motorcycle dealerships and accessory retailers worldwide. Spectro Oils is supporting the new Penton film, now in production, as a sponsor and promotional partner.

Over 40 years ago, John Penton discovered a unique synthetic lubricant product that Spectro had developed and began to market it under the "Hi-Point" brand that included apparel, parts, tires and more - all developed for the off-road motorcycle racer and enthusiast. Mr. Penton knew that Spectro's superior quality and performance was just what he was looking for to package as a Hi-Point product. Spectro Oils packaged various products as Hi-Point including synthetic blends for two- and four-stroke engines, two-stroke injector, gear lube, fork oils, chain lube and filter fluid. "Spectro is proud to be part of this historical film for not only the motorcycle industry, but for our own company as well," said President David Miller. "John Penton is an American motorcycle legend and icon who helped many companies, like ours, find success in the motorcycle industry."

Spectro Oils of America is not only contributing funds for the post-production process of the film, but more importantly will be actively promoting the forthcoming film to their dealers and consumers through distribution of the film's promotional materials. The film's producers feel that this type of cooperation will ensure the success of the film in many different motorcycle markets. "We are so grateful that Spectro has stepped in to support this film and will be helping to make sure the motorcycle world knows about it," said Todd Huffman, the film's Producer at Pipeline Digital Media (PDM). "John Penton knew he found a quality product with Spectro Oils all those years ago, and we know now we have a quality sponsor and partner involved with the film."

Over 80 interviews so far have been completed totaling dozens of hours of footage from the United States and Europe. More than 100 total interviews will ultimately be included, making this film the most star-studded in motorcycling history when it's released in the spring of 2014.

About The John Penton Story Film. The John Penton Story is a feature length documentary about off-road motorcycle pioneer and industry icon, John Penton and his family. It will be narrated by Grammy Winner, Lyle Lovett and feature over 100 interviews of the largest cast of motorcycle legends ever assembled on film. Spectro Oils Introduces New Platinum Heavy Duty STL

Engineering Excellence For The Sporty Engine.

BROOKFIELD, Conn. - January 30, 2013. Spectro Oils of America, based in Brookfield,  CT, is pleased to present Platinum Heavy Duty STL; Sportster Transmission Lube. Our 6 speed synthetic technology is now available for the Harley® Sportster and Buell®. This fully formulated synthetic transmission lubricant is engineered to work in all applications where the same oil lubricates the clutch, primary, and transmission.

Spectro Oils Vice President of Sales, Rollin Karoll explains, "Since the introduction of Spectro "6 Speed" transmission lube for HD big twins, Sportster owners have been asking for a lube of their own. That day is now here with the introduction of Spectro STL; Sportster Transmission Lube. Like our industry leading Heavy Duty 6 Speed Transmission lube, Spectro STL provides easier shifting, less gear noise and reduced heat for Sportsters. Our proprietary wet clutch formula also reduces clutch chatter and slippage. If you ride a Sportster, this is the transmission lube you've been waiting for!"

Spectro STL is a high-performance lubricant that provides superior performance and delivers the highest levels of protection for the Sportster drivetrain. Proudly made in the USA, with an API GL-1 rating, STL exceeds all known OEM and Harley-Davidson® warranty requirements.

Allen Scott of Florida states, "I've always hated the way my 2005-1200R Sportster shifted, especially when it's cold! The shift between first and second gears was never any fun, and neutral was just a pain while at a red light. Spectro had me test the new Heavy Duty Platinum STL; full synthetic sportster transmission lube, and now my bike shifts as good as my Road Glide. The Sporty transmission is now quieter and easier to shift and it finds neutral right out of the garage! Well done, Spectro!"

Dote Racing Names Leah Pruett For 2013

LEAH PRUETT NAMED DOTE RACING’S 2013 TOP FUEL DRIVER

MONROE, OH (Jan. 4, 2013) -- NHRA Top Fuel team Dote Racing announced today that former Hot Rod Heritage Series Champion and multiple NHRA Pro Mod national event winner Leah Pruett will drive the family owned dragster in the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, with the team’s partial schedule beginning in Pomona, Ca in February.

Pruett, 24, who began obtaining her Top Fuel crossover license in late 2012 with Dote Racing, will complete her licensing requirements at the upcoming Pro Winter Warmup at Palm Beach International Raceway later this month.

Based in Monroe, Ohio, the Dote Racing Team is led by veteran crew chief Doug Kuch who has tuned the team to two semi final finishes in 2012, in addition to qualifying the car in the ultra competitive field at all eleven events the Dote Racing Top Fueler entered. The team is actively seeking sponsorship for 2013 and beyond, with eyes on expanding their limited schedule into full season contention.

The opportunity for Pruett comes on the heels her highly successful two year stretch as a Pro Mod pilot for once mega team R2B2 Racing. While at R2B2 for nearly two seasons, Pruett kept her Nitro Funny Car license active by driving the team’s Nitro Funny Car tuned by Aaron Brooks and John Medlen at multiple test sessions throughout 2011 and competed in Funny Car at the US Auto Plus Nationals in Maple Grove, PA. Most recently Pruett scored three national event titles in the challenging NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx. She is also the 2010 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series Champion in Nostalgia Funny Car with wins including the famed March Meet and Hot Rod Reunion while driving for legendary tuner and chassis builder, Steve Plueger. The 2013 season will mark Pruett’s 17th consecutive year competing in the NHRA, while also making her eligible for the Rookie-of-the-Year honors in the NHRA Mello Yello Series.

"We are excited to add Leah Pruett to our team for the 2013 season," said Connie Dote, manager and co-owner of Dote Racing. "She brings with her a youthful approach and, despite her youth, she has demonstrated an untapped talent successfully driving nostalgia funny cars, as well as her breakthrough performance in the pro modified class. We believe and expect she will be a solid force in this highly competitive category and will represent herself, Dote Racing, and our current and future sponsors extremely well.”

Dote Racing has expanded their limited schedule to include the Winternationals, Arizona Nationals, and New England Nationals in addition to the ten regularly scheduled east coast and midwest based national events.

"I'm beyond thrilled," said Pruett. "I truly enjoyed testing the Dote Top Fuel Dragster in St. Louis last season and am very anxious to complete my cross over license, and lay down some fast times at PBIR, not to mention competing in the most prestigious class in all of drag racing. I’m sure everyone can’t wait to get nitro back in their veins, but I assure you, no one is more ready and hungry for it than me.” stated Pruett. “I have the utmost appreciation for the opportunity the Dotes are giving me to expand my driving capabilities into Top Fuel, and I intend on making crew chief Doug Kuch and the entire Dote Racing team proud of their decision to hire me.”

The 24-event 2013 NHRA Mello Yellow season opens in Pomona, Calif., Feb. 14-17, 2013.

Championship Win for Gary “Gee” Armstrong

Spectro Oils sponsored pro atv sand drag racer Gary “Gee” Armstrong—headquartered in Florence, Oregon—wrapped up his racing season by winning the 2012 championship title in the Sport Bike 2 Division of the Sand Drag Race Series in the Pacific Northwest. He also claimed second place in the Pro 2 Division.  The 24 race series runs from May through October and this year was comprised of a grid of 37 racers from throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“Last year, I finished in fifth and seventh place in the two Divisions.  I’d won the Oregon Off-road Racing Association’s  prestigious Pro Race in 2010, my rookie year as pro, so I knew I was better than that. So my racing goal and training for 2012 was to finish in the Top 3 in both of our Divisions.  A bold reach for me,” Gee grins.  “Although competition in our Division was incredibly intense this season, our Spectro Oils, Florence Yamaha/Redline Racing YFZ kept us first place points leader in both Divisions for most of the season.  We traded first and second place in the championship points a bunch of times, even tied for first place several times.  The fans loved it.  It was what racing should be: suspenseful, nail bitingly tight contests between just two of us at the top wanting to claim both Division titles.”

“I went into the October finals at Albany Speedway in first place in both our Divisions.  I won the Sport Bike Championship by 13 points. But I fumbled a bit the last day of the Finals with a couple of slower reaction times launching at the lights in the Pro racing because I’d come down with the flu.  We still brought home the Sport Bike championship title and runner-up in Pro for our friends and sponsors. So I achieved—actually exceeded—my 2012 goal. That feels really good!“
